At Work
Started working. Second day, already familiar with the area.
Got a new machine this afternoon — 2.4 CPU with only 40GB hard drive and 256MB RAM. No CD-ROM but a floppy drive. What were the buyers thinking…
Only 600 RMB monthly subsidy — Shanghai’s minimum wage is 615. After food and expenses, I’ll be lucky not to lose money. Feel like I’m selling myself.
Got interviewed by two people after joining. Their skill level wasn’t that impressive — they asked us to write a palindrome checker. Remember that from Tan Haoqiang’s “C Programming” textbook exercises. Barely an interview. Somehow got into their “most hardcore” OS group to write kernel code. But probably starting with testing and documentation.
Checked BBS — Microsoft Asia Research bigwigs are visiting next Tuesday. They want to see our Windows CE project. My work is cut out for me. Come on, come on!
