Tongji University Fundamental Software Center Established

After a week of work, a semester of waiting, and a year of preparation, Tongji University’s Fundamental Software Center was finally established today. There was a press conference called “Embedded Industry Chain Milestone Achievements Exhibition.” I heard it was even on TV.

First, I realize how important hype and showmanship are. This feeling started after Microsoft’s “Innovation Cup” last year and keeps growing. No matter what you’ve actually done, giving it a good name and flashy packaging to attract attention equals success. Maybe this conflicts with my Tongji education of “down-to-earth work,” but today proved my point again. Lin Zhenghao’s CPU, Chen Rong’s OS, the Automotive Institute’s in-car system, Jiang Changjun’s transportation grid — a seamless combination that promises a computing revolution for future cars. But how much substance is really there? Maybe I’m too naive to understand.

Second, the president is no joke. President Wan Gang’s speech yesterday, another VP answering journalists today — eloquent without notes, ready for People’s Daily headline. I’m still too young — I can barely string sentences together in class.

Third, Jiang Changjun stole the show. At the press conference, Chen Rong didn’t get a word in. I felt bad for him.

Fourth, I’m tired. Been折腾 (toiling) with the Automotive Institute program since last week. Last night until 10pm struggling with wireless networking. Teacher Shen says the focus will shift to wireless remote. Daunting task. I’ve been in this project from the start, don’t want to see it fail, but one person isn’t enough. Maybe it’s time to let go.

Finally got a photo with Boss Chen. Among the “20 People Influencing China’s Software Industry,” I’ve now gotten 2/20.
